Abubakar Suleiman is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank, a role he has held since 2018. He is an economist and a banker with more than twenty years in consulting and financial services.
He joined Citibank in 2000 as a trader, working across currency and securities trading, risk asset management and market risk. He moved to Sterling Bank in 2003 as Group Treasurer, and later served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer before taking over as Chief Executive. Under his leadership the bank has concentrated its lending on five sectors it abbreviates as HEART: health, education, agriculture, renewable energy and transportation.
He holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Abuja and an M.Sc. in Major Programmes Management from the University of Oxford.
